Resume Prompts for Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot appears in a chat window and inside Microsoft's own apps; prompt work belongs in the chat window, where you paste text and get text back. The first decision is which account you are signed in with — a work account sits inside your employer's Microsoft tenant, so job-search material belongs in a personal one. Copilot also answers from the web and footnotes its sources, which helps when you are reading a company up and hurts when search results start blending into your bullets. And it is still not the design step: a well-written paragraph is not a resume until something lays it out.
Every prompt here works in Microsoft Copilot from Microsoft, and in the other three. Nothing in this library depends on a feature only one of them has — what changes the output is the material you paste in, not the badge on the tab.
Before you paste any of these
- Check the account before you paste anything — Copilot signed in with your work account is your employer's tenant. Your resume, the posting you are answering, and your reasons for moving on are all things to keep in a personal account instead — this is a one-time check that costs nothing.
- Turn off the search, then read the footnotes — Add: answer only from the text I pasted, and do not search the web. Then look at the citations on the reply. A sentence in your rewritten bullet carrying a link to some external page did not come from your career — it came from a search result, and it goes.
- Ask for raw Markdown, not a formatted document — Output aimed at Word comes back with styled headings and no visible syntax, which is hard to move anywhere else. Return raw Markdown in a code block gives you portable text that drops into any editor unchanged.
- Keep each message self-contained — State the role, paste the source text, and name the operation you want, every time. It costs you one extra paste and removes any dependence on what the thread happens to be carrying from earlier in the session.
