Resume Prompts for Early-Career Professionals

Somewhere between year 1 and year 5 a resume flips: education stops being the headline and what you shipped takes the top of the page. The harder change is that early bullets tend to be written in "we" — team output with your own contribution buried inside it. The prompts here separate your work from your team's, retire student entries that have expired, and put real scope figures on the work you already do. None of them asks a model to promote you on paper; they ask sharper questions about what you have already shipped.

Before you paste any of these

  • Ask it to flag every "we"Paste your bullets and ask the model to mark each one where your personal contribution is unclear, without rewriting anything yet. Answer its questions in your own words, then let it rewrite from your answers.
  • Set an expiry date on student entriesPaste your resume and your target posting, then ask which pre-graduation items — coursework, GPA, clubs, the first internship — are still earning their lines now that you have real roles above them.
  • Describe scope before seniorityTitles mean different things at different companies; scope figures do not. Paste your own notes on team size, request volume, customer count, or budget and ask for bullets that carry those figures rather than adjectives.
  • Ask what level your resume reads asBefore you mention your target, ask the model what seniority the document describes and what evidence led it there. The gap between that answer and the job you want tells you what the next draft has to cover.

Build Experience Bullets From a Performance Review

You have a performance review or self-assessment and it is the best surviving record of what you actually did

I am building the Experience entry for one job out of my own performance review. A review is written for my manager, who already knows the context. A resume is written for a stranger who does not.

You cannot remember the detail of an older role but you still have the job description you worked under

I am rebuilding the Experience entry for one role using the job description I worked under. That document says what the job was meant to be. Only I know what the job turned out to be.
