Resume Prompts for Mid-Career Professionals

By 5 to 12 years in, the problem is rarely too little material — it is 3 roles that read almost identically and a resume drifting toward a third page. Selection becomes the actual work: what to compress, what to cut, and what story the sequence tells someone skimming it. These prompts push a model toward editing and ranking your existing history rather than adding to it. The most useful thing you can ask at this stage is what to remove.

Before you paste any of these

  • Ask for a duplicate report across rolesPaste your full history and ask the model to list the verbs and phrasings that repeat across roles, with counts, before it suggests anything. 3 jobs described in the same 6 verbs is hard to spot in your own document and quick to fix once it is listed.
  • Compress anything older than 10 yearsAsk for early roles reduced to title, employer, dates, and one line each, with full treatment kept for the recent 2 or 3. State explicitly that nothing may be added to an entry while it is being compressed.
  • Have it read the story back to youBefore you name your target, ask what career this resume describes in 2 sentences. If the answer is not the story you meant, the fix is ordering and selection, not new wording.
  • Stack promotions under one employerPaste the titles and dates and ask for a single employer block with the progression shown inside it, so 4 years of internal growth does not read as 3 short jobs.

Your LinkedIn profile is current but you have no resume file to send

Build Experience Bullets From a Performance Review

You have a performance review or self-assessment and it is the best surviving record of what you actually did

I am building the Experience entry for one job out of my own performance review. A review is written for my manager, who already knows the context. A resume is written for a stranger who does not.

Use an Old Job Description as a Memory Jog

You cannot remember the detail of an older role but you still have the job description you worked under

I am rebuilding the Experience entry for one role using the job description I worked under. That document says what the job was meant to be. Only I know what the job turned out to be.
