Resume Prompts for Senior and Lead Roles

At senior, staff, and lead level, a resume that lists tasks you completed reads as more junior than the work was, because the reader is holding a different question: what did you decide, who moved because of it, and how large was the surface you were responsible for. The best input here is not your old resume — it is a design doc, a postmortem, a reorg plan, or a review you wrote. These prompts work from that kind of document. They also check the opposite mistake: influence described so abstractly that nobody can tell what you actually did.

Before you paste any of these

  • Feed it a document, not a resumeA design doc, a postmortem, a migration plan, or a self-review carries the tradeoffs and outcomes that a resume bullet already flattened. Paste one and ask for bullets grounded only in what that document says.
  • Ask which bullets are still individual-contributor workHave the model split your bullets into work you personally executed and decisions that moved other people, labeling each without rewriting. Some hands-on lines should stay — you want to see the ratio before you choose.
  • State the scope a reader cannot inferTeam size, services or products owned, on-call reach, people you hired, budget. Ask the model to list which of these your draft never states, then supply the ones you actually know.
  • 2 versions, and make it show the cutIf you are weighing the management and the individual-contributor track, ask for a version of each plus a list of what it demoted or dropped in both. The cut list is where you will disagree with it, and that is the useful part.

You have a performance review or self-assessment and it is the best surviving record of what you actually did

You cannot remember the detail of an older role but you still have the job description you worked under

I am rebuilding the Experience entry for one role using the job description I worked under. That document says what the job was meant to be. Only I know what the job turned out to be.
